무역과 금융의 통합화는 국경을 넘어서 국가간 상호의존성을 증가시키고 있다. 이러한 경제적 상호의존성의 증가는 국제적 또는 지역적 차원에서 경제협력이 필요하다는 점을 시사한다. 1997∼98년의 아시아 금융위기가 바로 그러한 경제협력의 필요성을 여실히 드러낸 사건이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 금융시장의 불안정성이 특정 국가에 한정되지 않고 국경을 넘어 파급된 결과 동아시아 국가들이 예외 없이 경제적 어려움을 경험하였다. (생략)
The growing interdependence in the world through trade and financial integration has heightened the need to engage in international and regional economic cooperation. This was never demonstrated more clearly than during the Asian financial crisis of 1997.
