1990년대에 세계적 추세로 부상한 지역주의 현상은 21세기 초반에도 지속될 전망이다. EU와 미국은 지역경제통합을 계속 확대하고 있다. 2004년 5월 1일부터 EU 회원국 수는 15개국에서 25개국으로 증가하고, 북미자유무역협정(NAFTA)의 성공에 고무된 미국은 전미주자유무역협정(FTAA) 형성을 목표로 중남미를 포함한 전미주 지역차원에서의 경제통합을 추진하고 있는 상태이다. 이러한 대륙차원의 경제통합 움직임 이외에도 다수의 양자간 자유무역협정(FTA)이 추진되고 있다. (생략)
