This report assesses how the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will affect Korea exports, comparing the competitiveness between Korea and Mexico in the U.S. market. In this context, in preparing for the timing of NAFTA's establishment, Korea companies need to seek countermeasure actively.
This paper is organized as follows. Section II reviews NAFTA's background and its main contents. Section III illustrates NAFTA's current status and effects. Competitiveness between Korea and Mexico in the U.S. market are compared in Sections IV and V by analyzing export changes, competitive relations, competitiveness by item and NAFTA's tariff effect. Concluding remarks and policy implications are provided in Section VI. -

In order to analyze these effects, this study estimates the quantity of trade through each nation's natural resources using the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) model. Natural resources are made up of the labor population, human resources, the number of scientists, capital stock, the size of the area under cultivation, cattle land and forest area, coal, petroleum and gas, mineral resources and transport distance. -
