Industrial StructureDownloadContentSummaryThis paper is very helpful in understanding the features, problems and prospects of changes in the former East German industrial structure after the German unification. This would be valuable to make conjectures about North Korean industrial structure and to prepare for the unification of North and South Korea in the future. In this paper, Korean unification policymakers may extract important lessons from the German experience.
The contents of this discussion proceed as follows. Section 2 summarizes issues in dispute over former East German adjustment of industrial structure, including privatization and subsidies. Section 3 reviews German economic integration, especially its speed and associated financial burdens. Section 4 and 5 observe the remarkable features in changes to the former East German industrial structure after unification. Section 5 analyzes the changes in the East and West industrial structure, focusing on manufacturing industry. Based on these analyses, policy implications for economic integration on the Korean peninsula and a summary are provided in Section V. -
