The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held the KIEP Korea-Africa Cooperation Seminar on December 1 (Wed), under the theme of "The Future of Korea-Africa Cooperation and Remaining Challenges in the Post-COVID Era," at the President Hotel in Seoul. At the two-session seminar, domestic and foreign agricultural and health care experts sought ways to develop agriculture and health care in South Africa during the COVID-19 era and discussed measures to cooperate with Korea.

President Heungchong Kim of KIEP, Director-General Jang-Hyun Kim at the African and Middle Eastern Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador H.E. Mamadou Gueye FAYE of the Embassy of the Republic of Senegal to the ROK, Representative and Head of Shengyao Tang of the FAO Partnership Liaison Office in Korea attended this seminar as primary attendees.

In addition, officials from the embassies of six African countries, including Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Kenya, C,te d'Ivoire and Tanzania, attended this forum.

President Heung-chong said in his opening speech that African countries, in particular, have faced challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and deterioration of health care due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, he emphasized the importance of Korea-Africa cooperation to adapt to climate and resolve food security problems, as climate change has a significant impact on African agriculture and food security.

Professor Jangsaeng Kim of Yonsei University hosted the first session under the theme of "Future of Agricultural Cooperation: Where we stand, where we go?". Dr. Moonsu Kang of KIEP presented under the theme of "African Agriculture and Food Security in the post-COVID Era." Dr. Hyo-jeong Lee of Korea Rural Economy Institute (KREI) delivered a presentation under the theme of "What did we learn from Korea-Africa agricultural cooperation?"  Dr. Manzamasso Hodjo, as an FAO consultant of the FAO Africa Regional Office, presented on "The future of Korea-Africa agricultural cooperation.“

Dr. Seoni Han of KIEP hosted the second session under the theme of "Future of Health Cooperation: How can we overcome remaining challenges?". Ms. Eunmi Kim, as a Technical Officer of WHO, presented under the theme of "Public health challenges in Africa amid the COVID-19 pandemic". Dr. Dongyeong Lee, as the CEO of Noul, presented under the theme of "Digital healthcare cooperation cases in Africa." Professor Sangchoi Yoon of Yonsei University presented under the theme of "Training healthcare workers in the COVID-19 era: Cooperation through the digital platform."
