Since its establishment on January 17th, 1990, KIEP has contributed to the formulation and implementation of Korea’s international economic policies through its exceptional research and in-depth analysis of the global economy. The ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on KIEP’s 35 years of achievements and discuss its future direction as a national research institute amid a rapidly changing global environment.

In his commemorative address, President Siwook Lee emphasized the need to manage risks arising from changes in trade dynamics, such as the U.S.-China rivalry, in the short term. He also highlighted the importance of addressing demographic changes, including low birth rates and an aging population, to establish a dynamic and innovative foundation for future generations.

President Lee further stressed the importance of redefining Korea’s international economic strategies. Moving beyond the traditional model of growth driven through the exports of goods, he called for diversification through service exports, direct investments, labor mobility, technological exchanges, bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and development assistance. He also reaffirmed KIEP’s commitment to producing high-quality research to guide Korea’s international economic strategies and address contemporary challenges.

The ceremony was attended by President Siwook Lee, Vice President for Research Planning and Management Chan-Kwon Bae, Vice President for External Affairs Sungbae An, and other staff members, and also featured an awards presentation ceremony for outstanding research achievements in 2024. The Best Report for 2024 was awarded to the study “Characteristics of the Recent Global Economic Fluctuations and Implications in the Era of Fragmentation” led by Dr. Sang-Ha Yoon at KIEP.
