On Friday, April 12, 2024, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) convened the 2nd Meeting of the 2024 KIEP Research Advisory Committee at the Conference House Dalgaebi in Seoul, South Korea. This was the second meeting of the Committee this year, following the first in February, annually held to discuss and select KIEP research projects for the next year.

Director Kyung-Seol Min from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Director General for FTA Policy Chang-Yong Ahn from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Professor Woo-Sik Moon from the Seoul National University, Professor Dong-Ho Cho from the Ewha Womans University, President Chul Chung of the Korea Economic Research Institute, President Yul Sohn of the East Asia Institute, Chief Executive Officer Hyung Joo Kim of LG Business Research, Professor Hyuk Jung from the Seoul National University, and Senior Research Fellow Mansoo Jee from the Korea Institute of Finance contributed their expert opinions as members of the advisory committee.

The participants predicted higher uncertainty in the trade environment in 2025 as strategic competition between the U.S. and China intensifies and geopolitical conflicts expand. In that context, they urged for KIEP to conduct research on topics such as new trade, supply chain, oversupply, high technology, etc.

The experts also offered suggestions on the direction of research and topics that could utilize KIEP's strengths in regional research, such as cooperation in advanced economies, the Global South, and international development cooperation. In addition, they called for research related to global responses to low birth rates and aging, which have emerged as national challenges.

President Siwook Lee of KIEP said, “KIEP will actively reflect the opinions gathered from the committee into its 2025 business plan and pursue other research topics that require timely responses through various projects.”
