On Thursday, February 16th, 2023 at 10:00 AM, the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) hosted the 2023 KIEP Northern Policy Seminar at the Emerald Hall of Hotel Thomas Myeongdong in Seoul. The seminar focused on the theme of "Evaluation and Outlook After One Year of the Ukraine War."

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, has created a sense of instability and uncertainty in the global economy and security landscape. It is widely regarded as a historical event with a major impact on the international community.

As the possibility of the war escalating and becoming prolonged looms, it has become crucial to evaluate the impact of the conflict one year on.

At the 2023 KIEP Northern Policy Seminar, attendees took a closer look at the situation in Ukraine one year into the war, and gained a deeper understanding of the perspectives and positions of major powers on key issues in the international arena. The seminar provided valuable insights for shaping Korea's foreign policy.

In his opening remarks, President Heungchong Kim of KIEP highlighted that the Ukraine war marked a resurgence of geopolitics and that the world order and relationships between major powers were set to change dramatically after the conflict.

President Kim emphasized that this seminar served as a starting point to understand the direction and contents of the evolving world order and to prepare appropriate responses.

The first session of the seminar evaluated the key points and prospects for the Ukraine war, one year and counting. The second session focused on the economic impacts and prospects of the conflict in the areas of energy security and international relations. The third session covered the economic sanctions and major country spillover effects of the war.
