The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held international forums for cooperation in Chile (11.28), Argentina (11.30), and Brazil (12.1) to evaluate economic cooperation between Korea and major South American countries and discuss future cooperation directions.

The co-hosts of each forum were, respectively, the Chilean-Korean Chamber of Commerce Trade Association (Cámara de Comercio Chileno-Coreana), the Argentine Council for International Relations (Consejo Argentino parallas Relacions Internationales, CARI), and the Brazilian Institute of Economics (Institio Brasileiro de Economy, IBRE). KIEP agreed to continue cooperation in future research pursuits with major research institutes from the three countries attending the forum.

The Korea-Chile Cooperation Forum began with opening remarks by President Mark Thiermann of the Chilean-Korean Chamber of Commerce Trade Association, followed by a welcoming speech by President KIM Heungchong of KIEP, under the theme of “Evaluation of Korea-Chile FTA and future cooperation between the two countries.” The forum consisted of presentations on a wide range of views on the Korea-Chile FTA 18 years after its entry into force, the role of the FTA as a channel for the Korea-Chile partnership, future trade relations between Chile and Korea, and strategic relations between the two countries.

The Korea-Argentina Cooperation Forum was held under the topic of “Evaluation of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Latin America and future cooperation between Korea and Argentina.” President Jose Octavio Bordon of CARI made an opening speech and President KIM Heungchong of KIEP delivered a welcoming address. The presenters evaluated the 60th anniversary of diplomacy and immigration between Korea and Argentina, and reviewed the significance of the Korea-MERCOSUR Trade Agreement (TA) and the direction of negotiations taking place.

The Korea-Brazil Cooperation Forum was held under the theme of “Brazil’s economic outlook and prospect for MERCOSUR.” President KIM Heungchong of KIEP gave his opening statements and Klaus Stier, Manager for International Affairs at the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), delivered welcoming remarks. The main topics of presentations were IBRE’s productivity observatory, Brazil’s economic outlook, Brazilian trade structure and the status of the Brazil-MERCOSUR agreement, and the current status of value chains in Latin America.
