The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held a "Korea-Morocco Joint Seminar for African-Asia Partnership" with a local research institute, Policy Center for the New South, at 10:30 a.m. on September 23, 2022 (local time) to mark the 60th anniversary of Korea-Morocco diplomatic relations.


President Heungchong Kim of KIEP and the domestic Middle East and economic experts, including Senior Fellow Larabi Jaidi, Senior Fellow Mohamed Loulichki, Senior Fellow Mounia Boucetta of PCNS attended the event to analyze the diplomatic environment surrounding Korea and Morocco and seek ways to expand Korea-Morocco cooperation.


President Heungchong Kim said in his opening speech, "Global uncertainties such as COVID-19 and supply chain collapse are increasing at home and abroad, and food security problems in North Africa have deepened due to the Russia-Ukraine war." President Heungchong Kim explained the event's purpose: "Inflation is emerging around energy and groceries, and on the other hand, green growth and digital transformation are becoming more prominent, so it is time to seek new cooperation between Korea and Morocco."


Session 1, headed by Director Abdelaziz Ait Ali of PCNS, was held under the theme of "Korea-Morocco Economic Relationship and Agendas for Further Cooperation in Africa" and attended by Former President Youngsun Lee of Hallym University, Senior Fellow Larabi Jaidi of PCNS, Senior Fellow El Mostafa Rezzi of PCNS, Professor Jae Wook Jeong of Sogang University, Head Munsu Kang of Africa and Middle East Team at KIEP. 


In Session 1, participants discussed the importance of expanding cooperation between Korea and Morocco through a review of Korea-Morocco economic cooperation and an announcement and discussion on the food security crisis in North Africa.


Session 2, headed by Director Mehdi Benomar of PCNS, was held under the theme of "Changes in the International Relations and Dynamics of Regional Integration in Asia and Africa" and presented by Senior Fellow Mohamed Loulichki, Senior Fellow Mounia Bouchetta, Professor Park Hyun-do of Sogang University, Professor Saerom Han of Sookmyung Women's University and Deputy President Kwon Hyung Lee of KIEP. In particular, Session 2 highlighted the direction of cooperation between Korea and Morocco during the global transition through discussions on changes in the diplomatic landscape and implications in the Middle East and North Africa following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.
