President Heungchong Kim Attends the 28th PECC General Meeting 2

President Heungchong Kim of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and Director Yungshin Jang of the Korea National Center for APEC Studies at KIEP attended the 28th PECC General Meeting and Standing Committee Meeting from July 21 to 23. Held via virtual conference, the meetings were co-hosted by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) and New Zealand Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (NZPECC), with all members of the PECC participating in the general meeting to discuss major issues in the Asia-Pacific region and share their views.

Under the theme of “Implementing the Putrajaya Vision - Revitalising the Regional Economy and Ensuring Sustainable and Inclusive Societies,” the general meeting consisted of four pillars, covering the topics of COVID-19 responses, open trade, digital economy and climate change. President Kim, who also serves as Chairperson of the Korea National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (KOPEC), shared his views on the EU GDPR and measures to harmonize the free movement of data with the privacy issues in the digital economy session.

The Standing Committee Meeting, in which Director Jang participated as a representative of South Korea, was also held to discuss pending issues of the PECC, such as electing an international co-chairperson, raising funds for its operation and expanding its member states.
