2024 Korea-China International Seminar

The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) hosted the 2024 Korea-China International Seminar under the theme of “China’s ‘New Quality Productive Forces’ Development Strategy and Korea-China Cooperation” on December 18th, 2024, at the Westin Josun Hotel in Seoul. The event aimed to examine China’s “New Quality Productive Forces” as a novel growth driver and development model, exploring its regional implementation and the potential for bilateral cooperation between Korea and China.
The seminar opened with welcoming remarks by Vice President Sungbae An of KIEP, followed by keynote presentations and two thematic sessions. Vice President An highlighted that understanding the concept and regional applications of “New Quality Productive Forces,” which has emerged as a key component of China’s economic policy, would provide insights into practical implementation. He further remarked that the event would offer an opportunity to reflect on whether the Korea-China relationship will transit into a competitive dynamic or a mutually beneficial one.
The keynote address, delivered by Deputy Director Li Jinbo (李金波) of the Regional and Industrial Economy Research Department at the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), was titled “China’s New Quality Productive Forces Development Strategy and Korea-China Cooperation.”
In Session 1, Director Zhou Shunbo (周顺波) of the New Economy Research Center at the China Development Institute (CDI) discussed “The Development Trends of New Quality Productive Forces in Guangdong and Opportunities for Industrial Cooperation with Korea.” Subsequently, Professor He Xiyou of Fudan University presented on “Shanghai’s Construction of the ‘Five Centers,’ the Six Major Industries’ Transformation, and Korea-China Cooperation.” Director Pan Faqiang (潘法强) of the Jiangsu Huaxin Regional Economic Development Institute, explored a “Study on the Development of New Quality Productivity Convergence between Korea and China.”
In Session 2, Secretary Liu Liyun (刘立云) of the Party Committee at the Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences, spoke on “Promoting High-Quality Regional Development through New Quality Productive Forces in Sichuan.” Afterward, Director Jin Meihua (金美花) of the Northeast Asia Research Center at the Jilin Academy of Social Sciences, addressed “Exploring New Cooperation Structures with Korea through New Quality Productive Forces in Jilin.” And last, Professor Bi Jingqian (毕婧千) of Ludong University examined “Development Strategies for the Elderly Care Industry in Shandong and Korea-China Cooperation.”
The seminar featured notable participants, including Professor Jong-Hak Eun of Kookmin University, Professor Pilsoo Choi of Sejong University, and distinguished researchers from KIEP. The attendees exchanged diverse perspectives, deepened their understanding of China’s “New Quality Productive Forces,” and explored strategies to enhance economic collaboration between Korea and China.
