The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held a visiting scholar’s seminar with Dr. Zoia Podoba from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia at the KIEP conference room in Sejong on April 4, 2023. Dr. Zoia Podoba has participated in the KIEP Visiting Scholars Program for one month. The seminar was organized to share results of research activity conducted over her visiting period, jointly with other researchers at KIEP.

Dr. Zoia Podoba presented her ongoing project, “Analysis of Trade Pattern between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and South Korea”, in this seminar. She explained total trade between the EAEU and Korea has tended towards expansion since the creation of the union, although the trade growth was not stable due to oil prices fluctuations, Russia-related sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic. Undoubtedly, the expansion of volumes and forms of cooperation between the EAEU and Korea under sanctions regime is becoming more and more challenging. To develop cooperation based on the pursuit of mutual interests, partners may focus on the opportunities in those industries that are not fully subject to restrictions. In this context, the production and distribution of cosmetics and beauty products, medical tourism, telemedicine, online education, accelerating cooperation involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as venture capital companies, deserve special attention. She also added that the EAEU and Korea have distinctive and highly complementary economic structures. Therefore, the magnitude of trade-related benefits has enhanced with mutual trade cooperation growth, despite the harsh geopolitical and economic condition.

KIEP experts including Dr. Kwon Hyung Lee, Deputy President of Center for Area Studies, Dr. Minhyeon Jeong, Head of Russia and Eurasia Team, Ms. Jiyoung Min and Ms. Boogyun Kang, Senior Researcher of Russia and Eurasia team attended the seminar and discussed the findings covered in the presentation.
