The seminar was part of the Korea-China International Seminar, which has been held annually by KIEP to strengthen and develop economic exchanges and cooperation with China, and this year, it was held under the theme of "Marine Economy." Due to the quarantine situation caused by COVID-19, experts from China attended the event online.

Vice President Jung Sung-Chun of KIEP noted in his opening speech that Korea and China have celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, pointing out that economic cooperation between the two countries has made rapid quantitative and qualitative development over the past 30 years. Vice President Jung evaluated that the recent advancement of Chinese manufacturing industry and deepening strategic competition between the U.S. and China have increased the need to find a new space for cooperation, and said that he expects Korea and China to seek economic exchange and cooperation through the maritime economy.

Vice President Shuguang Liu of the Academy of Ocean of China presented a keynote speech under the theme of "China Marine economic development demonstration area planning and Sino-Korean cooperation." He explained that China has designated 15 marine economic development pilot zones for marine economic development and is promoting various key tasks, including the overall progress and the need for cooperation with Korea and the international community.

This event was attended by researchers studying the Chinese region at KIEP and various experts related to China's marine economy, and through this seminar, the specific demand for maritime economic cooperation between Korea and China was discovered, focusing on China's marine economic development demonstration zone.
