The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held the 26th Korea-Latin America Business Forum at the Conrad Hotel Seoul on November 25th (Friday), 2022, with the Korean Council on Latin America and the Caribbean (KCLAC), the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), the International Contractors Association of Korea (ICAK), the Center for Large and Small Business Cooperation and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of Korea.

The forum focused on examining the achievements of economic cooperation and discussing future challenges to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Latin America. Experts‘ presentations and discussions on Latin American politics, the economic and trade environment in 2023, reorganization of global supply chains,  business opportunities and plans to enter Latin American construction and plant markets continued during the event.

In his opening remarks, President KIM Heungchong of KIEP stressed, “As the global economy shrinks and conflicts between countries over advanced technology are intensifying, the atmosphere of international cooperation is weakening.” However, he added, “In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Latin America, we should seek a new partnership that can strengthen our mutual economic security.”

Executive Managing Director Hyun Chul Kim of KITA noted in his welcoming speech that Korea and Latin America have achieved quantitative and qualitative development in trade, investment, and FTA networks over the past 60 years. He emphasized that using this as a stepping stone, Korea and Latin America should be reborn as practical cooperative partners in areas where both sides have strengths, such as e-commerce, service, content, economic security, and digital and green transformation.

Throughout the first to fourth session, participants evaluated the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Latin America and examined the political and economic trade environment in Latin America in 2023, along with the recent reorganization of the global supply chain and business opportunities arising therefrom.
