The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC), and Incheon Province jointly held the 2022 DMZ International Forum in Incheon for two days from November 3rd to 4th, under the theme of “Peace on the Korean Peninsula and International Cooperation in the Era of Great Transformation and Economic Security.”

On the 1st day of the forum, which was jointly organized by KIEP, the Incheon Institute, and the Academy of Chinese Studies at Incheon National University, the participants visited Korea's economic and security centers, including the LG Science Park Innovation Gallery, offering an opportunity to appreciate the importance of economic security in a period of global transition and major changes in the international situation, such as digital transformation, green transformation, the COVID-19 pandemic, deglobalization, localization and blockization. Participants also discussed Incheon's role in the process of modernization and economic development of South Korea.

The 2nd day of the forum began with an opening speech by JUNG Haegu, Chairperson of the NRC, and congratulatory remarks by YOO Jeong-bok, Mayor of the Incheon Metropolitan City  (read by JANG Je-hak, Ambassador for International Relations, Incheon City). Kathleen STEPHENS, President & CEO of the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI), Mohan KUMAR, Chairman of Research and Information System for Developing Countries, Gordon FLAKE, Chief Executive Officer of the Perth USAsia Centre/Professor of the University of Western Australia, Michael REITERER, Distinguished Professor of the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy (CSDS) of the Brussels School of Governance, attended the keynote session online and in person to discuss peace on the Korean Peninsula and international cooperation in the era of global transformation and economic security.

In the afternoon, KIEP, the Incheon Institute, and the Academy of Chinese Studies at Incheon National University gathered to hold two additional sessions on the theme of seeking economic security and peace on the Korean Peninsula in the era of U.S.-China strategic competition, transnational urban sovereignty, and the establishment of a peace zone in the border region.

Experts from various countries, including Korea, the U.S., China, Japan, and France, held in-depth discussions on the topics. The forum was evaluated as providing important momentum for discussing emerging economic and security issues and traditional security issues resulting from the division of South and North Korea, in connection with diverse policies promoted by the Korean government.
