The Impact of China’s Rise on the Korean Labor Market and Its Implications

  • Author Kyong Hyun Koo

Unlike other advanced economies, South Korea has experienced a large increase in its exports to China as well as its imports from China due to the rise of China since the 1990s. As a result, the China shock made a substantial share of Korean manufacturing jobs disappear, but also led to a commensurate number of manufacturing job creations. This partly explains the rebounding trend in Korea’s manufacturing employment starting from the 2000s, which is an unusual phenomenon hard to find in other advanced economies. Given that the substantial change in manufacturing jobs have also affected considerable jobs in other sectors through domestic industrial linkages, it is apparent that a large share of Korean jobs have become closely intertwined with the Chinese economy during the rise of China over the last decades. To pursue successful Korean labor market policies, it should be the first step to thoroughly learn how the Korean labor market has adjusted to the rise of China.
