Unfolding Inequality: How It Continues to Evolve
- Author Gee Young Oh
- Series245
- Date2022-08-30
Inequality is a long-standing issue that exists in various forms. Moreover, it even evolves as the social and economic environment changes. As such, there has been much effort to reduce it globally. Despite global efforts to reduce inequality across and within countries, COVID-19 hit and made such efforts go in vain. Furthermore, the pandemic has illustrated how inequality can evolve by exacerbating inequalities like income and gender inequality and accentuating relatively newer factors of inequality like digitalization. By doing so, the pandemic has disclosed a long-due homework with modifications: inequality in its new form. It will not stop here. Recent structural transformations other than digitalization like climate change, trade wars, and even Artificial Intelligence can cause further disparities if we are not mindful. Inequality, like a virus, will evolve with structural changes, and we need effective inequality-conscious policies that thoroughly understand it and are responsive to such evolutions.
