KIEP’s Korean Studies Grants (KKSG) 

 

1. Program Outline

Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) offers a grant program in Korean studies designed to assist the research of individual scholars based in the United States to encourage research projects or programs that provide in-depth analyses and policy recommendations on the political, social, and economic issues of Northeast Asia, particularly involving the Korean Peninsula issue.

 

2. Eligibility

Applicants must be currently working at a university or a research institute (think-tank) and/or a research institute within a university in the U.S.

 

3. Grant Areas

Policy research on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asian issues 

Example of Major Topics: Issues on the Korean Peninsula (Peacebuilding, Denuclearization, Reunification, Security, Economy)

 

4. Grant Coverage

Costs for the project expenses, researcher (staff) salary and/or indirect costs 

- Indirect costs can be requested up to 20% of the total grant amount. Total costs, including indirect costs, cannot exceed $40,000 per grant application

 

5. Grant Period

December 1, 2018 ~ May 30, 2019 (6 months)

 

6. Program Schedule

Application Period: October 5 (00:00 KST) to November 4, 2018 (18:00 KST)

Notification of Results: November 15, 2018 (The notification will be made on an individual basis) 

 

7. How to Apply

Submit the research proposal and curriculum vitae of the project director and member(s) in the attached format to the following email address: publicdiplomacy@kiep.go.kr. 

The application must be written in English and the detailed budget should be computed in US dollars.

 

8. Evaluation Criteria

8.1 Relevance and timeliness of the research topic

8.2 Capability of applicants and their experience in terms of achievements and activities related to Korea and Northeast Asia

8.3 Thoroughness and feasibility of the work plan including research methodology and approaches

8.4 Soundness and cost efficiency of the project budget and funding plans

8.5 Anticipated results of the proposed project and plans for dissemination of research results

-  Participation in or publishing a book (e.g. Proceedings or an edited volume)

-  Participation in at least one event (workshop, international conference, etc.) for the purpose of publicizing/disseminating research results.

 

9. Reporting

The recipient institution is required to submit the following reports within the grant period:

- Summarized final report (KIEP form)

- Detailed project report (free format)

- Financial report (Endorsed by the highest financial officer of the participating institution, KIEP format)

- Related Outcomes (Books, articles, etc.)

 

10. Important Reminders

The application is required to be submitted under the name of the endorsing institution or university. 

 

The institution applying for the program should notify KIEP of any change to the information contained in the original plan after its submission. 

 

KIEP, in the process of screening applications, may require an applicant institution to submit additional information or adjust the project plan. 

 

After notifying applicants of the results, KIEP will discuss the details of each project and its budget with the respective recipient institution and conclude the grant letter (contract). 

 

After the conclusion of the grant letter (contract), the KIEP’s grant will be remitted to the institution in a specified time schedule in the grant letter (contract).

 

The KIEP grant must be received and managed by an overseas institution.

 

The project should be carried out according to the schedule and plans specified in the application. If the project must be postponed or canceled for unavoidable reasons, the institution should consult with KIEP. 

 

The grantee of the KIEP grant must give a presentation at a proper place in Washington D.C. for the purpose of disseminating research results by June 30, 2019. KIEP will additionally cover domestic round-trip air-tickets (up to $1,200) and two nights’ accommodation to facilitate the presentation of research results at Washington D.C. Further details will be announced by the end of 2018.
