Invitation

Northeast Asia has been a center of culture and civilization since the beginning of history, until it was
overwhelmed by the scientifically and technologically superior West, ultimately accepting a large part
its of institutions and ideas. Starting in the latter half of the 20th century, Northeast Asia has changed
through imitation and creation into a region showing vibrant change and progress in the areas of
economics, politics, society and culture. In the 21st century, it again stands at the center of global
change. Northeast Asia’s Korea, China, and Japan, together with Europe and America, have become
the three axes of world leadership. Geographically, apart from these producer and consumer markets of Korea, China, and Japan, the natural resources market of Siberia-Russian Far East exists in Northeast Asia. This is a region possessing the rare combination of all necessary factors for development. Why
Northeast Asia? The immediate reason Northeast Asia is once again receiving the spotlight is the rapid economic development of China. It is especially timely that we are co-hosting with the Korea Institute for
International Economic Policy and the Chinese Economists Society this international conference to
assess the current economic situation of FTAs in Northeast Asia and the region’
s response to globalization, under the theme of Globalization and Regionalism of the Northeast Asian Economies, to celebrate the third visit to Korea of the Chinese Economists Society in America.

Your attendance and participation at the conference will be greatly appreciated. In concluding, I would
like to say a word of thanks to the Maeil Business Newspaper, the Presidential Committee on Northeast
Asian Business Hub, and The Asia Research Fund for their assistance in making this conference
possible. Thank you very much.
