Invitation

Dear Participants,

It is my great pleasure to announce and invite you to an International Conference on “EU Enlargement
and the Korean Economy,” which will be hosted by the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy
(KIEP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) and the Korea International
Trade Association (KITA) on April 29, 2004. I am extremely pleased and honoured to convene this very important conference on the eve of the fifth Enlargement of the EU of May 1, 2004. I believe that the conference will provide a valuable opportunity to review important issues in the process of the Enlargement of the European Union and to discuss the impacts of the Enlargement for the world economy. Substantial emphasis will be placed in the conference on the response of the Japanese and Korean business sectors to the Enlargement, which will be of great importance to academic and government spheres as well as business.

At this stage, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and
Korea International Trade Association for providing the necessary support for this endeavor. I believe that,
based on the fifth Enlargement, the relationship between Korea and the EU will enter into a new era of
cooperative activities. Moreover, further activities based on the success of this conference are expected
to contribute substantially to the strengthening of activities of common interest. These activities will prove
instrumental for promoting the image and profile of the EU in Korea.

I am confident that this conference will provide us with an excellent opportunity to exchange our views
and explore possibilities to enhance the relationship between Korea and the EU as well as enhance our
further cooperative activities.

Thank you very much for your support, and I look forward to meeting you at the upcoming conference.

Sincerely,

Dr Choong-Yong Ahn
President
Korea Institute for International Economic Policy
