The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 and the US–China strategic competition are having a powerful effect on Pakistan’s statecraft, pushing it to align more closely with China. At the same time, characterisations of Pakistan as a client state of China, let alone an ally, remain overblown, even if it has few regional options to counterbalance Chinese influence.
