Indian commercial banks provide services to two categories of clients—wholesale clients (large companies, governments, and financial institutions) and retail clients (small businesses, firms, and individuals). This categorisation has become important with the differential capital adequacy requirements for banks depending on their exposure to retail banking assets. Retail banking is becoming increasingly important as a bank’s future strategy with liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) requirements that make retail liabilities more beneficial from a regulatory liquidity requirement perspective.
