The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held the 2021 KIEP and Associations of Area Studies Conference (2021 KAAS Conference), jointly hosted by 16 Associations of Area Studies on October 8, under the theme of “The Changing U.S.-China Relationship and Responses of Emerging Economies in the Post-Covid-19 Era.”

KIEP has been holding the annual KAAS Conference since 2014 to spread important findings in the area of regional studies and expand networks between domestic and foreign experts. 

Marking its eighth anniversary this year, the 2021 KAAS Conference was hosted at the Busan Port International Exhibition Convention Center (BPEX), expanding the base of area studies into the local community.

KIEP President Heungchong Kim said in his opening speech that in the post-COVID-19 era, emerging countries are facing the task of responding to the U.S.-China confrontation as well as quarantine and vaccination efforts, economic recovery, also stating his hopes for local researchers to put their heads together to find a direction for emerging countries.

This was followed by congratulatory speeches by Hong Koo, President of Busan University of Foreign Studies, and Cha Jeong-in, President of Pusan National University, and greeting remarks by Song Chi-Woong, Chair of the International Association of Area Studies, and Dong wook Won, Chair of the Korea Academic Association of Contemporary Chinese Studies.

During the conference KIEP held its own session, in addition to sessions hosted by various academic societies, and a new session was dedicated to up-and-coming scholars in the field to discuss the challenges facing the international community in the post-COVID-19 era and promising countermeasures.

Jong Hwa Kim, Chair of the Busan Finance Center, Kyo-wook Song, President of Busan Development Institute, Chul-Ho Lee, Professor of Pusan National University, Lim Sung-won, editor-in-chief of the Busan Ilbo, and Inkyo Cheong, Professor of Inha University, attended the KIEP session.
