The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) invited Professor Bokyeong Park of Kyung Hee University for a Leading Experts Seminar on September 30 under the theme of "Economic Transition of Post-Covid19-Era and the Role of Think Tanks."

Prof. Park explained that COVID-19 caused the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression in the 1930s, emphasizing the need for active monetary and fiscal policies. He mentioned that there are signs of a revival of large governments around the world, citing the Biden administration's fiscal policy. He also highlighted the evidences of economic transition in the post-Covid-19 era, such as the deterioration of globalization, accelerated digital transformation, and the demands for "good capitalism.“

Prof. Park attributed these changes to deepening economic inequality, antipathy to globalization, rivalry between the U.S. and China, and the reconstruction of the alliance between the U.S. and the EU. He stressed that state-run think tanks should respond quickly to new issues amid the rapidly changing global economic order. In particular, proposing bold and creative policies through a wide perspective and strategic approach is the key roles of think tanks, Prof. Park emphasized, also stressing the need for more diversity in methods of delivering research results.

The LES was attended by Heungchong Kim, President of KIEP, Sung-Chun Jung, Vice President of KIEP, and other in-house experts exchanged their opinions on the role of think tanks.
