The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held the 6th KIEP New Southern Policy Forum at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul on September 8 (Wed). This forum evaluated the results of Korea-India cooperation following implementation of the New Southern Policy (NSP), leading to in-depth discussions on future tasks to strengthen collaboration between the two nations.

KIEP launched the KIEP New Southern Forum in August 2018 to establish a new cooperative system with India and ASEAN, partner countries to the NSP, and identify promising policy tasks. Through this forum, KIEP researchers have supported the Korean government's promotion of NSP projects by analyzing pending issues in the region and seeking ways to cooperate with economic, political, diplomatic, socio-cultural experts.

The event was attended by President Kim Heungchong of KIEP, former Ambassador to India Shin Bongkil, former Managing Director Kim Moon Young of the KOTRA South Asia Head Quarter, and experts from various fields in the New Southern Region. In his opening speech, President Kim Heungchong stressed the importance of strengthening Korea-India cooperation to cope with international political and economic uncertainties such as weakening multilateralism, the U.S.-China conflict, and digital transformation. Referring to India's high competitiveness in science and technology and business environment, President Kim stressed the need to establish specific projects in various fields in the future and actively inject resources at the government level. In addition, President Kim explained that KIEP is also contributing to practical measures to expand Korea-India cooperation by strengthening its research capabilities in India.

Former Ambassador to India Shin Bongkil gave a presentation on “The Future of New Southern Policy and Korea-India Relations,” and former Managing Director Kim Moon Young of the KOTRA South Asia Head Quarter gave a presentation under the theme of “Performance and Tasks of Korea-India Economic Cooperation.” In addition, various experts related to the New Southern Policy and the New Southern Region attended the free discussion and discussed cooperation performance with India and ways to strengthen cooperation in the future.
