The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) invited Lee Jong-seok, Director of the Center for East Asian Cooperation at the Sejong Institute and former Unification Minister, for a Leading Experts Seminar on June 3 under the theme of "Korea-U.S. Summit and the New Direction of Korean Diplomacy."

In his presentation, Director Lee evaluated the summit an overall success, despite some issues of concern. More specifically, the summit had a wide range of positive outcomes, such as: the declaration of the end of the Korea-U.S. missile guidelines, support for inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation, and establishing a stable supply chain in high-tech manufacturing sectors (semiconductors, batteries, and medicine).

In regard to negotiations on North Korea's nuclear weapons program, Director Lee proposed a phased approach based on snapback measures. Considering North Korea's nuclear capability, low level of trust between the U.S. and North Korea, and the complicated process of verifying the implementation of denuclearization measures, such a phased approach is the only solution and corresponding measures should be pursued in stages, he stressed.

Director Lee also emphasized that Korea has already emerged as an advanced country in multiple areas, and needs to continue to improve its capabilities by interacting with the world. He concluded the session by sharing his opinion that public diplomacy should be further expanded to allow more people to interact and share the true aspects of our lives and culture with the world.
