Seminar on New Order of Trade and International Finance in a Rapidly Changing Economic Environment

The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP), in collaboration with the Korea International Finance Association (KIFA) and the Korea Institute of Finance (KIF), hosted a seminar under the theme of “New Order of Trade and International Finance in a Rapidly Changing Economic Environment” on June 5th, 2025, at the Korea Federation of Banks in Seoul.
The event commenced with opening remarks by President Sunghyun Kim of KIFA, followed by congratulatory speeches from President Siwook Lee of KIEP and President Hangyong Lee of KIF. The seminar was structured into three sessions.
In his congratulatory speech, President Siwook Lee emphasized that in light of the fundamental restructuring of the global economic landscape, Korea must transition from its traditional export-oriented growth model and formulate a new external economic policy.
Session I featured three presentations: Dr. Junhyong Kim of the Korea Development Institute (KDI) presented on “Corporate Dollar Debt and Global Trades: The Role of Firm Heterogeneity.” Professor Sung Ryong Kim of Johns Hopkins University discussed “Liquidity Shocks and Firm Exports: Evidence from Cash Shortages during India's Demonetization.” Professor Jun Hee Kwak of Sogang University gave a presentation titled “Economic Sanctions: Firm- and Product-level Anatomy.”
Session II included three presentations: Dr. Minki Song of KIF analyzed the “Decoupling Trend between the KRW/USD Exchange Rate and the Dollar Index.” Dr. Jee Won Park of KIEP presented on “Investment Giants in Emerging Markets.” Professor Soo Kyung Woo of Sejong University examined the topic “Unbalanced Trade: Is Growing Dispersion from Financial or Trade Reforms?”
Lastly, a panel discussion was conducted under the theme “Is KRW 1,400 the New Normal?”
The joint seminar served as a timely platform to explore transformations in the global trade and financial order, and to discuss strategic directions for Korea's external economic policy in response to rapid shifts in domestic and international economic environments.
