The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held a visiting scholar’s seminar with Dr. Durairaj Kumarasamy from Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, India at the KIEP conference room in Sejong on January 11, 2023. Dr. Kumarasamy has participated in the KIEP Visiting Scholars Program for one month. The seminar was organized to share results of research activity conducted over his visiting period, jointly with other researchers at KIEP.

 

Dr. Kumarasamy presented his ongoing project, “Strengthening Value Chain Linkages between India and South Korea: Opportunities for Trade and Investment Cooperation”, in this seminar. The study explores the trade and investment relationship between India and South Korea and identify the potential sectors to engage in the sustainable value chain between two countries.

 

Indian government has instituted the Production Linked Incentives (PLI) scheme in 2020, aiming to enhance India’s Global Value Chain participation, foster building domestic capabilities with its investment incentives, and make it pertinent part of the global supply chain and promoting India’s export by incentivizing domestic and foreign manufacturers. In particular, India is becoming an attractive destination for South Korean startups that are eyeing overseas expansion, given the country’s vast population and diverse markets offering rich opportunities for potential investors. He adds that both India and South Korea consider sustainable supply chain and adopt integrated approach to strengthen value chain link.

 

KIEP experts including Dr. Kwon Hyung Lee, Deputy President of Center for Area Studies, Dr. Jeong Gon Kim, Head of India and South Asia Team, Dr. Kyunghoon Kim from India and South Asia Team, attended the seminar and discussed the findings covered in the presentation.
