The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held a Visiting Scholar Seminar with Dr. Peiping Gong from the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research (CAMR) on August 27th, 2025, at Conference Room 346 of KIEP. The seminar was organized to conduct a comparative analysis of the impacts of U.S. tariff policies on China and South Korea, with the aim of proposing joint countermeasure strategies.

Dr. Gong delivered a presentation titled “A Comparative Analysis of the Impacts of U.S. Tariff Policies on China and South Korea and Coordinated Countermeasure Recommendations.” Her presentation provided an in-depth analysis of the recent U.S. government’s imposition of “reciprocal tariffs,” high tariffs on steel and aluminum, and the termination of duty-free benefits for small parcels, as well as their impacts on trade and industry in both China and Korea.

Furthermore, Dr. Gong proposed joint countermeasures which entailed addressing the decline in exports to the U.S. and sector-specific impacts, strengthening China’s external diversification strategy and domestic demand expansion policies, enhancing Korea–China cooperation for supply chain stabilization, pursuing coordinated entry into third-country markets, and advancing negotiations for the Korea–China FTA Phase Two.

The seminar was followed by an in-depth discussion with KIEP experts, including Senior Research Fellow Pyeong Seob Yang and Research Fellow Jihyun Jung; Associate Research Fellow Ji Young Moon; Senior Researchers Jonghyuk Oh, Hong Won Kim, Jae Hee Choi (China Team), and Da Woon Lee (Africa, Middle East, and Latin America Team); and Researchers Boyeong Park and Minsoo Park (Economic Security Team).
