The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and the Chinese Academy of Macroeconomic Research (CAMR) co-hosted the Korea-China Academic Exchange Conference under the topic of “New Changes in Korea-China Economic Relations and Future Direction of Cooperation” on October 18th, 2024 at the Westin Josun Hotel in Seoul.

The meeting was an opportunity to explore future-oriented cooperation plans for South Korea and China through in-depth discussions on the changing economic relations between the two countries and direction of cooperation.

Siwook Lee, President of KIEP, and Huang Hanquan, Dean of CAMR, emphasized the importance of academic exchange and economic cooperation between the two countries in their opening speeches.

President Siwook Lee of KIEP emphasized that Korea-China cooperation is an important driving force with enormous impact not only on the economies of both countries but regional stability as well. “In this context, today’s meeting is very significant as a forum for in-depth discussion on creative cooperation measures between the two countries,” he said.

Dean Huang Hanquan of CAMR noted that it is necessary to consider what kind of long-term and strategic perspective the two countries should take to achieve joint development and secure leadership in the global economy.

Session 1 was held under the theme of “New Changes in Korea-China Economic Relations and Future Directions of Cooperation.” Dr. Jihyun Jung, Head of the China Team at KIEP, presented on the changing environment for Korea-China economic cooperation and new cooperation measures, and in the following discussion, Dr. Ji Young Moon of KIEP and Dr. Xu Jianwei provided additional opinions, leading to an in-depth discussion on ways to strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.

This was followed by Session 2, which dealt with the topic of “Direction of Deepening and Expanding Korea-China Economic Cooperation.” Dr. Liu Yue of CAMR gave a presentation under the theme of “Characteristics and Key Areas of Economic Cooperation between Korea and China.” In response, Dr. Liu Xuchang of CAMR and Dr. Seung Shin Lee, Executive Director of KIEP, participated in the discussion to find ways to expand economic cooperation between the two countries.

This Academic Exchange Conference not only deepened economic cooperation between South Korea and China, but proved an important opportunity to seek practical cooperation measures through academic exchanges. In particular, researchers from both countries held a joint research council to reinforce cooperation between the two institutes and discuss the future direction of research cooperation.
