[농업경제] Climate-resilient agricultural practices in Bangladesh

방글라데시 국외연구자료 연구보고서 - Elgaronline 발간일 : 2022-10-18 등록일 : 2023-03-17 원문링크

Bangladesh is an agrarian country where agriculture is the mainstay of the country's economy and serves as the greatest employment sector. This country is facing a great challenge in agricultural food production for its ever-rising population with the shrinkage of agricultural lands. Bangladesh is one of the most climate change- vulnerable countries in the globe where agriculture is constrained due to climate change-induced hazards such as drought, flood, salinity, riverbank erosion etc. In the coming decades, the country is likely to be negatively affected by the rise of sea level and saltwater intrusion, increase in mean temperature, rainfall variability, and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events that will have considerable impacts on agricultural production.Besides, our land quality is deteriorating day by day due to degradation of soil fertility, nutrient mining, soil erosion, soil and water pollution, depletion of organic matter, water logging, increased pan formation, acidification, water shortage, deforestation and inadequate management practices, etc. These climate-driven as well as anthropogenic factors are destroying agricultural environment and are threatening soil and human health. Therefore, a long term strategy should be proposed to use and conserve agricultural biodiversity efficiently for improving food production under unpredictable climatic conditions. Integration and patronization of sustainable agricultural techniques like mixed farming systems, organic agriculture, integrated pest management, more use of organic manures, crop rotation, recycling crop and animal wastes, no-tillage or minimum tillage agriculture, inter- cropping, multi-cropping, cover crops, etc. should be adopted in climate hot spots areas. The climate-smart agriculture (CSA) can only improve the integration of agricultural development and climate responsiveness that aims to achieve food security and broader development goals under a changing climate and increasing food demand. By adopting this concept, many people in the developing countries of the world have improved their livelihood through better adaptation to climate change. This chapter focuses on some natural disasters and climate hot spot areas of Bangladesh, some climate-smart agricultural practices adopted in the world and also in Bangladesh, the opportunities and challenges of CSA to facilitate environmentally sound development in crop sector.
