Trade plays an important role in economic growth and this has been particularly true for APEC economies in recent decades. Efficient, reliable, and flexible supply chains facilitate that trade and the expansion of international production networks, including through just-in-time delivery systems. Infrastructure, institutions and service providers each have a key role to play in supply chain performance and are the focus for improvement in supply chain efficiency. Douglas H. Brooks is Assistant Chief Economist and director of the Development Indicators and Policy Research Division at the Asian Development Bank.
